What is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based, skills-focused approach that helps people develop practical ways to manage emotions, cope with distress, navigate relationships, and respond more effectively to challenging situations.

What does “dialectical” mean?

The word dialectical refers to bringing together two ideas that may seem to be in opposition.

One of the central ideas in DBT is that acceptance and change can happen at the same time. You can acknowledge and accept where you are right now while also working toward meaningful change.

DBT doesn't ask you to choose between accepting yourself and wanting things to be different. Instead, it encourages both.

DBT is a skills-based approach

One of the things that makes DBT distinctive is its emphasis on learning and practising practical skills.

Rather than only understanding why something is happening, DBT also asks:

“What can I do differently when this happens?”

These skills can help you pause before reacting, navigate intense emotions, tolerate difficult moments, communicate more effectively, set boundaries, and make choices that align with your values and goals.

What makes DBT different?

DBT brings together acceptance, behavioural change, mindfulness, and practical skills.

It recognizes that difficult emotions are a normal part of being human while also recognizing that we can learn new ways of responding to them.

DBT isn't about eliminating difficult emotions or always staying calm. It's about developing the awareness and skills to respond more effectively when life becomes challenging.

Who can benefit from DBT skills?

DBT skills can be useful for people experiencing a wide range of challenges, including difficulties with emotional regulation, coping, relationships, or managing stressful situations.

You don't need to have a particular diagnosis to learn DBT skills. They can also be helpful for anyone who wants to strengthen their emotional regulation, coping strategies, communication, and overall wellbeing.

Building a life worth living

At its heart, DBT is about more than managing difficult moments. It is about developing the skills and awareness needed to create a life that feels meaningful, balanced, and worth living.

The goal isn't perfection. It's learning, practising, adjusting, and continuing to move toward the life you want.
